Caps week of community outreach throughout North America

Charlotte, May 24 – Electrolux today announced the donation of more than $200,000 in refrigerators as part of a community outreach effort taking place this week throughout North America. During the week, Electrolux employees have been giving back to the communities in which they live and work by volunteering and donating appliances.

Capping the week in Charlotte, where the Electrolux North American headquarters are located, employees donated two 18-wheeler trucks filled with new refrigerators and vacuums to Crisis Assistance Ministry. These will be donated to needy families and individuals. Also refrigerators were donated to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, which will distribute them to local soup kitchens.

“As part of the launch of our new Frigidaire Gallery brand French door refrigerator, we’re celebrating with a week dedicated to our corporate purpose of making a positive everyday difference in people’s lives,” said Jack Truong, president and CEO of Electrolux Major Appliances North America. “The innovative features and ENERGY STAR rating of these refrigerators meet two of the most critical needs a needy family has: keeping food fresh and nutritious while also lowering their overall utility bill.”

“We are committed to giving back to Charlotte and are very pleased to be volunteering across North America,” Truong added.

Carol Hardison, CEO of Crisis Assistance Ministry, said, “We were delighted to learn of this amazing gift from Electrolux to low income families in our community. Refrigerators are essential items when helping a family overcome a financial crisis, rebuild their lives, and move toward long-term stability. Get ready to see someone hug their new refrigerator. ”

The company manufactures cooking, laundry, dishwashers, floor care products, refrigerators and freezer products at its ten North American factories. All of the products are designed locally in Charlotte.

Although Electrolux has a strong tradition of product donation and volunteerism among its employees, this week marks the first time the company has held community outreach efforts across its North American locations simultaneously.

How to Participate

Crisis Assistance Ministry will distribute the refrigerators through various partner agencies who work to eradicate homelessness. For more information, please visit crisisassistance.org/refrigerators.

Leading global design competition presents top 100+ submissions

Charlotte, N.C., April 4, 2013 – Today, Jillian Tackaberry, a Chicago industrial design student was chosen from 1,700 submissions to be presented among the 100 best ideas in Electrolux Design Lab 2013. The concepts represent the Inspired Urban Living theme and focus on social cooking, natural air and effortless cleaning. Some of the trends to be seen in this year’s competition are the rise of 3D printing technology, wearable appliance accessories and smart technology in social cooking.

More than 100 ideas from 29 countries around the world can be seen on the Electrolux Design Lab website where the public can also vote for their favorite concepts. Best concepts chosen by Electrolux professionals and the public make it to the next stage of the competition and compete over the main prize of 5 000 Euros and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design center.

Though 26 American design students submitted competition ideas, 21-year old Jillian Tackaberry, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago, made it to the top 100 with her Air Drop concept, a hanging plant design that removes indoor air pollution and reflects the trend of smaller and more efficient living spaces. The idea features a hanging plant container that absorbs gasses and removes particles from the air through the use of two filtration methods. Tackaberry is excited to be a part of the globally recognized competition and wanted to choose a relevant topic as the basis for her design:

“I am honored to receive this global recognition,” says Tackaberry. “I live in a small apartment and understand space constraints. This design incorporates a trend that consumers are facing every day, and provides a solution to eliminating air pollution without compromising space.”

“This competition truly brings out the best in a designer, as it outlines a specific design theme, but still leaves plenty of room for your creativity and passion to shine through,” she said.

New technologies and inspiring design solutions

Electrolux professionals from Design, R&D and Innovation chose the best concepts from all of the submissions. Design Director Thomas Johansson comments on the submissions:

“The concepts we chose from 1,700 submissions to be further developed are relevant, inspiring and convincing, with clever ideas how to make cooking, cleaning and air cleaning more inspiring in the future. Some of the trends we can see in this year’s competition are different ways to use 3D printing technology, wearable appliance accessories, new approaches to integrated appliance solutions, concepts that reflect our memories and highlight our senses as well as smart technology in social cooking solutions. This is an exciting year also because the concepts go beyond products; we received many interesting design solutions which also have services and consumables.”

This year the competition will be conducted in five stages, allowing the applicants to concentrate on different areas throughout the process. The best concepts will now be developed further after which they will be evaluated by Electrolux professionals. Each concept can be voted by the public and the ones that receive the most votes receive direct access to the next round. The next submission deadline is Wednesday, May 1, at which point the field narrows to the top 50 concepts.

Global recognition, prizes and an internship to be won

Once the talented finalists have been selected, the student whose concept receives the most public votes will be named the winner of the People’s Choice Award and will receive a prize of 1,000 Euros. First prize will be awarded to the student that the judging panel highlights as creating a ground-breaking design solution of the future. This student will receive 5,000 Euros and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design centre; second prize is 3,000 Euros; and third prize is 2,000 Euros.

$100,000 Total to Support Students in Science, Technology

Charlotte, February 26, 2013 – Electrolux and Johnson C. Smith University today announced the creation of the Electrolux Science and Technology Scholarships. The company is providing $100,000 in funding over the next four years for students from the L.I.F.T. zone of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools majoring in science and technology subject areas at Johnson C. Smith University.

The scholarships will be available to West Charlotte High School graduates who are enrolled in JCSU’s College of STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The scholarships will provide a maximum of $5,000 annually and are renewable. Certain eligibility requirements, such as maintaining defined grade point averages, will apply.

The scholarships are designed to support both entering first-year students and students who are already enrolled but encounter a gap in funding that can derail progress towards graduation. Five scholarships of up to $5,000 each will be available for each of the next four academic years. In addition, recipients may be eligible for internships with the company during or after their junior year.

“Our community and our world need more students who are well-prepared in the STEM subjects,” said Jack Truong, president and CEO of Electrolux Major Appliances North America. “Electrolux is a high-tech company with a storied history of innovation. Our continued success depends on our ability to hire well-trained students with backgrounds in engineering, mathematics and the sciences.”

Truong spoke from the new Electrolux Innovation Center, a complex that showcases the company’s innovative technology and brings together consumer testing with research and development capabilities. He added, “We are delighted to be partnering with Johnson C. Smith in providing educational opportunities to future scientists and engineers.”

Dr. Ronald L. Carter, president of Johnson C. Smith, said, “We thank Electrolux for this important investment in our students to help us prepare them for the competitive global marketplace of STEM-related careers.”

“The greatest investment we can make is an investment in our young people,” said Charlotte Mayor and Project L.I.F.T. founding member Anthony Foxx, who attended the press conference. “We know that the jobs of the future will be heavily concentrated in the fields of science and technology, and in order for Charlotte to continue to compete in the global economy we must have a workforce that is proficient in that skill set.”

The Electrolux Innovation Center complements the design, testing and marketing capabilities that already exist in its Charlotte-based North American headquarters. These include: research and development for laundry products built in North America (opening in 2013); research and development for electronic systems of all major appliances built in North America; product design for all major and small appliances built in North America; and research and development for vacuum products built globally.

Local leaders join Electrolux executives on tour of facility, set to open in 2013

MEMPHIS, Tenn., January 15, 2013 – Jack Truong, president and CEO of Electrolux Major Appliances North America, joined other Electrolux senior management today to provide a preview of the inner workings of the new 750,000-square-foot Electrolux manufacturing plant to local and state leaders and the news media. Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, Memphis Mayor AC Wharton, State Senator Mark Norris and Tennessee Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey were among the group who participated in the first tour of the facility.

Electrolux highlighted different pieces of high-tech digital equipment, including specialized robotics and automated assembly lines. This technology and manufacturing process is part of Electrolux’s commitment to innovation and will be key to the production of Electrolux®, Electrolux ICON® and Frigidaire® built-in and specialty cooking products, including drop-in/slide-in ranges, wall ovens and specialty freestanding ranges. Electrolux executives also showcased the plant’s research and development center, which was designed to simulate a product’s lifetime usage and performance expectations and can test up to 380 products at one time. The group also got a look at the latest construction progress, and saw four of the first stoves that will be produced on the manufacturing line.

“We are putting down roots here in the Memphis community and are excited about what the future has in store for us,” said Truong. “As we come into the home stretch of construction, we want to thank all of the individuals, local and state leadership, and the organizations that were part of a group effort in getting us to this point. Our state-of-the-art facility is a perfect example of successful collaboration between public and private entities.”

The Memphis plant has already hired 90 employees and will hire approximately 160 more between now and May 2013. Positions are currently being offered in engineering, supply chain management, finance and operations management. The plant will eventually employ 1,200 people over the course of the next five years as it reaches full production. An estimated 3,600 more jobs will also be created by suppliers who will support the plant. This is the second Electrolux facility in Tennessee – the company also has operations in Springfield, bringing total state employment to approximately 4,000. Electrolux is the largest manufacturer of cooking products sold in the U.S. and Canada.

Charlotte, NC — Electrolux today announced it will relocate its North American laundry products research and development center to Charlotte, North Carolina from Webster City, Iowa. The move signals a commitment to further product innovation in its fabric care business and builds on the design, testing and marketing capabilities that already exist in its Charlotte-based North American headquarters.

“Electrolux is driving a strong pace of new product innovation to continually create consumer value,” said Chris Harris, vice president of Laundry and Dish Care Products, Electrolux Major Appliances North America. “We are increasing our R&D investment, moving closer to major science, engineering and technology universities and leveraging on the state-of-the-art research facilities that we already have in Charlotte.”

Electrolux will bring 80 research and development jobs to the city, growing its local employment to more than 800. The new positions will include engineering, product design and testing. Despite challenges in the economy, the company continues to outperform the US home appliance industry.

Product design and testing will be discontinued at the company’s Webster City, Iowa facility in the third quarter of 2013.

“This was a difficult but necessary decision,” Harris added. “The company is committed to assisting our Webster City employees and we are making this announcement nearly a year in advance to help with the transition.”

Company begins installation of research and development center

MEMPHIS, Tenn., November 26, 2012 -The first wave of Electrolux employees moved into the new $190 million Memphis manufacturing plant today. The 50 employees will be among the first to work in the 750,000-square-foot facility that will begin manufacturing stoves and ranges in 2013.

The employees include plant management, human resources, construction management and staff support. One of their first responsibilities – and one of the company’s most important efforts — will be to install equipment in the plant’s research and development center. This includes the technology and machinery to simulate a stove’s lifetime usage and performance expectations and more than 300 products can be tested at one time.

“We look forward to opening the plant and developing new product innovations to meet consumer needs,” said Jacob Burroughs, vice president, Global Food Preservation Purchasing. “As a company, we are increasing our research and development efforts and this center and plant are an important element that we’re eager to launch. Construction is going very well, and we are thrilled to be on track with our timing and our first phase of hiring.”

The move is one of several recent company developments that have occurred as Electrolux brings its second facility to Tennessee – the company also has a facility in Springfield.

Electrolux recently joined with the Delta Regional Authority and Memphis Area Association of Governments to commemorate the newly expanded and improved Paul Lowry road in front of the plant located at the Frank C. Pidgeon Industrial Park.

Electrolux has also partnered with several community organizations to offer advanced opportunities for employment. Industrial Readiness Training courses at Southwest Tennessee Community College began last week, offered through the Work Investment Network (WIN) to individuals without a background in manufacturing. The courses were designed based upon Electrolux specifications and training requirements. The company has already hired 50 employees and will hire approximately 200 more between now and May 2013. Positions are currently being offered in engineering, supply chain management, finance and operations management.

The Electrolux plant is designed to produce Electrolux®, Electrolux ICON®, and Frigidaire® built-in and specialty cooking products, including drop-in/slide-in ranges, wall ovens, and specialty freestanding ranges. The plant will eventually employ 1,200 people over the course of the next five years as it reaches full production. Electrolux is the largest manufacturer of cooking products sold in the U.S. and Canada.

MEMPHIS, Tenn., October 12, 2012- Beginning in October, the Workforce Investment Network (WIN) will refer eligible job seekers to an Industrial Readiness Training program designed for those individuals interested in working at the new Electrolux manufacturing facility, which will be a state-of-the-art plant manufacturing cooking products.

Electrolux has already hired about 50 individuals and is expected to hire about 200 more by May 2013 in Engineering, Supply Chain, Finance, Operations Management, Manufacturing and Assembly as the company tests its production lines. When Electrolux reaches full production over the course of the next five years, it is expected to employ more than 1,200 employees in all of the above areas, as well as Quality and Electrical. WIN will serve as the primary point of contact for individuals seeking entry-level employment with Electrolux by screening and referring qualified individuals to an Industrial Readiness Training class. The classes are being offered at Southwest Tennessee Community College and are in partnership with WIN and Electrolux.

Three classes of 25 students are scheduled to begin November 12 and end in early December. The cost of the Industrial Readiness Training course is $1,200, but WIN has funding available to pay the class tuition for eligible candidates.

Graduation from the class does not guarantee a position within Electrolux, but the course will be designed based upon Electrolux’s specifications and training requirements.

Additionally, those completing the class may enroll in WIN’s “Launchpad,” which further prepares and helps connect Industrial Readiness Training graduates to other employment opportunities. Since January 2012, 250 individuals have completed a WIN-sponsored Industrial Readiness Training class, and 60 percent of those individuals have been hired by area manufacturing companies.

To learn more about the Industrial Readiness Training class, please call (901) 636-7955; or visit www.workforceinvestmentnetwork.com/industrial-readiness-training; or attend an Electrolux Industrial Readiness Training Orientation and Eligibility Session offered at WIN’s main location at 444 N. Main St., 2nd floor entrance, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, October 15, 2012 through November 7. Each Orientation and Eligibility session will take approximately four hours. A list of documentation required for intake at WIN can be found at www.workforceinvestmentnetwork.com/industrial-readiness-training.

Individuals who already have advanced manufacturing work experience and would like to be considered for Electrolux employment opportunities may view job postings and submit resumes at www.Electrolux.com or visit www.WINrecruits.com to register and upload a resume. Those visiting WINrecruits.com should indicate interest in Electrolux employment opportunities by typing “Electrolux” in the “Additional Information” box on the WINrecruits.com registration page.
