Tips on buying your first washing machine

• Measure the space where you plan to install your new appliance. You may find that your washing machine does not fit if your measurements are off by even an inch or two.

• Decide on the type of machine that suits your needs. There are two main types of washing machines, front loading and top loading, with each type of machine containing its own set of pros and cons. For example, front load washers generally use less detergent but can have longer wash cycles while top loader machines usually have a bigger capacity but they can use more energy when using hot or warm water cycles.

• Inspect the functions, settings and capabilities that are available for each machine. These include noise levels, wash cycles, capacity, special garment cycles and possibly even energy-efficiency settings. Next, determine which of these functions are essential for your needs. If you own a lot of clothes made of fine silk, wool or other delicate materials, you should get a washing machine that is equipped with a delicate cycle. However, if you are concerned with saving water or energy, you should choose a product with a setting that enables you to do so. On the other hand, if you have a large family, then you should buy a model with a larger washing capacity.

• Set a budget and stick to it when you start comparing the prices of different models from several department and appliance stores. Also, try speaking to friends and family to get feedback on what to look out for when deciding which machine to get. A well-trained salesperson can also help by explaining the various product features and the differences among models.

• Ensure that the purchase includes a valid product warranty.
