Upping the green ante through recycling plastics

The green movement has been around for decades but it’s taken man some time to realise and act on the devastating effects that industrialisation and consumerism have had on planet Earth. The quest to make life seemingly better has had some consequences on the world we inhabit.

What comes to mind when you think about saving the environment? Do you think about the “3Rs”– Reduce, Reuse and Recycle? Of these, reduce and reuse are easier to take on, such as reducing the usage of electricity, water and paper or reusing items instead of dumping them. The immediate impact of recycling may not be as obvious to individuals taking steps to do their bit for the environment as reusing or reducing. But the truth is, recycling does make a big difference to the environment.

For instance, when we recycle our waste products instead of dumping them out, landfills don’t get filled to the brim as quickly. This means less land needed to be cleared to make way for more space to handle our waste. Fewer trees will be cut down and animals will be spared from being displaced from their natural habitat.

Recycling

By recycling waste, far less energy is also used when manufacturing new products. This reduces the precious fossil fuels that are extracted from the earth, and greenhouse gases being burnt off into the atmosphere. It takes 95% less energy to recycle aluminium than it does to make it from raw materials. Creating recycled newspapers shaves off 40% of the energy consumption. To make a product with recycled plastics means using 70% less energy.

Plastic recycling is the process of recovering scrap or waste plastics and reprocessing the material into useful products. This could mean melting down plastic drink bottles and other used plastic items to make chairs and tables, and even the Electrolux range of green vacuums. Recycling is also more energy efficient than incinerating used products we conveniently call waste.

Recycling prevents habitat destruction, loss of biodiversity, soil erosion associated with logging and mining, and ultimately leaves the environment as close to its natural state as possible, in the long run. Recycling also results in a drop in air and water pollutants released into the environment.

Electrolux has been keeping with the times, not just in design and technology but also in doing its part to be eco-friendly. It’s a commitment we take seriously. Our vacuum cleaners for example are made with recycled plastics. The body of the Ultrasilencer Green is made from 55% recycled plastics and the ever popular Ergorapido will see a green version being launched shortly to further up the ante. This also marks the launch of the first ever green stick vacuum cleaner that’s made from 70% recycled plastics.
