Asthma is a persistent problem in many societies and its prevalence continues to grow with rapid urbanistion and industrialisation. In central and South Asia alone, more than 50 million people suffer from this ailment. This is according to the Global Burden of Asthma report in 2007. The number is believed to be higher today.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by recurrent breathing problems and symptoms such as breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness, and coughing. It cannot be cured but can be managed with medication, and through proper prevent of another attack.  Air pollution has been credited as the main culprit that triggers asthma attacks, and worsens the symptoms of other respiratory diseases.

World Asthma Day, which falls on 3 May, is an annual event organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world.  This year’s theme isYou Can Control Your Asthma.” Indeed, there are simple steps you can take to help manage and prevent an asthma attack in your own home.

There’s been growing scientific evidence to show that the air within homes and buildings can be more seriously polluted than the air outdoors. People in modern industralised societies also spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. So for many, the risks to health may be greater due to exposure to indoor air pollution than the air outdoors.

Research has shown that the air indoors can be up to 40 times more polluted than the air outside. Pollutants such as germs, tobacco smoke, dust mites, pet dander and bio-aerosols thrive well in warm, humid environments. These pollutants can penetrate our respiratory tract, causing respiratory hazards, allergies and trigger asthma attacks.

According to a guide by GINA, one of the easiest ways to avoid common allergens and pollutants starts with reducing and eliminating house dust mites. This can simply be done by washing bed linen and blankets weekly in hot water and drying them well in a dryer or in the sun.

Next, is to clean your home with a vacuum cleaner with filters. Powerful vacuum cleaners can effectively clean out harmful particles and mites trapped in carpets. The Electrolux Ergorapido is great for this as it’s easy to use around the home for quick pockets of cleaning or for a more powerful and super silent cleaning solution, the Electrolux Ultrasilencer is a great option that works on both hard floors and carpets.

Air filters too can help remove dust particles, pet fur and other household pollutants that are invisible to the naked eye. These include indoor mold, cabinetry or furniture made of certain pressed woods, pesticides, household cleaners, solvents or chemicals we use to maintain the shine in the homes, and even personal care products like hair sprays.  High pollutant concentrations can remain in the air for long periods even after you’re done using these items.
