Children dream of a greener Singapore on National Day

Singapore celebrates her 46th birthday on 9 August this week. Crowds of Singaporeans will celebrate the nation’s independence with annual celebrations that include the ever-popular military parade, grand mass dance displays and performances and of course, spectacular fireworks.

Others commemorate the occasion by hanging the Singapore flag outside their homes, something that was previously restricted to the national day period between 1 July and 30 September, until the rules were relaxed in 2004. And of course, still more celebrate the nation’s favourite past time – shopping – at the National Day sales around the island.

With all the festivities going on, it’s easy to forget that less than half a century ago, the country faced a highly uncertain future. With no natural resources save a strategic geographical location as a sea port, Singapore was faced with an uphill struggle to become self-sufficient.

While today’s global economic climate is no less uncertain, Singapore’s children can still dream of a brighter, greener future with Electrolux’s Dreaming of a Greener Singapore contest.

Children aged 12 and below were asked to create a ‘skin’ for an Electrolux washing machine by drawing their dreams of a greener Singapore. The winning entry stands to win an Electrolux home appliance makeover worth about $5,400.

Participants as young as three took part in the competition, which will be decided by both an Electrolux judging panel and an online voting contest at the Little White Book page on Facebook. Check the page for more details on the online voting contest.

In the meantime, here’s a preview of some of the entries for the competition:
