New Year’s Parties are always fun but the post-party mess is another matter. The party decorations have been hung up. The food is gently warming in the oven and the punch has been deliciously spiked. It’s going to be a new year and you’ll be ushering it in with the party to end all parties.

Before kicking off the festivities however, here are some helpful tips to ensure you don’t end up with a house that appears to have thrown up on itself with confetti, dirty utensils and sticky stains of mysterious origin the morning after. And remember,  you’ll have to get around to the clean up eventually, and it’s usually better sooner rather than later!

Be Prepared!

If you haven’t already got these in the house, pick up cleaning items during your last minute shopping. Garbage bags, stain removers and all-purpose cleaners, whatever you might need to clean up post-party.

During the party, put out the garbage bags or trash cans where they can be easily seen and accessed. When your guests can dispose of rubbish conveniently, they’ll naturally do so rather than leave their used napkins or cups lying around.

Get your crew together

You can either get help with the clean up as the party is winding down – helpful friends will usually offer on their own – or you can corral up the family to help out after it’s all over. Either way, the task won’t be so daunting when you’ve got a few extra hands around.

It might be helpful to designate a central area before the party, for everyone to bring their used utensils or leftover food to, like the kitchen.  This helps contain the cleaning area and makes for easier and faster tidying up.

Prioritise!

Most people’s first to-do in a clean-up is to go around collecting utensils and trash left behind. But stains may not always be so patient. Make finding spills and stains the top priority and deal with them appropriately before they set.  If the stains are found on removable sheets, fabrics and garments, here’re some tips for dealing with the different kinds of stains.

Refuse and reuse

When you’ve ensured that no damage is permanent, move onto collecting the rest of the garbage. Throw away the disposables and put the dirty dishes and utensils into the sink. Empty the half-filled glasses in the sink and set them on the counter. Here’s when dishwashers like the ElectroluxESF6150 might come in handy, as it’ll wash your dishes for you while you clean up the rest of the house. And with less water used too.

Do check whether leftover food and drinks can be refrigerated before tossing them. Leftover wine can be used in cooking later. Freezing it in your ice cube tray can help to preserve it until you need it for a dish.

You can leave some of the work to the next morning, such as putting away the cleaned dishes from the dishwasher, but do wipe down any dirty surfaces before going to bed.

Dust up and suck up

After a good night’s rest, start the new year with some dusting and vacuuming. The Ergorapido vacuum is good for a quick run through of the house while the UltraActive vacuum cleaner can take care of most surfaces, including upholstery.
