A home is more than just a place to return to at night.  It’s a sanctuary from the rest of the world, a space where we live, relax, play and build relationships with our family.  So when a person’s surroundings start falling apart or getting old, it’s no surprise that they themselves may soon get in a rut that a simple clean up or de-cluttering can’t help.  Sometimes nothing less than a reshaping of personal space is needed to rejuvenate our spirits.

But not everyone can afford an expensive renovation or remodelling of the home. The good news is you don’t really have to do either.  Here are some tips for revitalising your personal spaces and in turn, yourself.

Take it slow

Rejuvenating your living areas require some planning and time.  It’s almost like moving into a new home, so don’t rush it and plan to achieve your new space over a reasonable amount of time.

Take a look at the available space and think about where things could go to free up more space, allow better lighting into the room or just make it easier to get around.  Jot down your thoughts or sketch out what you’d like to do or where things should go as a rough guide for getting started.

Try to stick to the plan and be methodical.  This takes time and patience, however, so don’t worry about running over schedule or if something doesn’t quite fit.

Let go and de-clutter

Before you start, do try to get rid of all non-essential things, as if you were really moving house. Letting go of old things definitely has an effect on both mind and body, releasing both physical and mental baggage we may not know we had.  More practically, a good de-cluttering also means fewer things to have to put back together once you start moving things around.

In the process of de-cluttering, you may find certain spots or furniture that may have gotten dusty.  A good run-through with a Rapido handheld vacuum not only helps with a little light cleaning, , but a cleaner environment could help put you in the mood for the rest of the work to come. The Rapido is also designed for easy cleaning, with wheels attached at its base to help support your arm and prevent wrist sprains.

Change your spots

Don’t just move a few knick knacks around. Move your bed under a window to make it the focal point of your bedroom or place your living room furniture at an angle to prevent a long room from looking like a tunnel.  Arrange large furniture in a corner to facilitate foot traffic through the room.  Since you’re looking to achieve change, try to find a new place for as much items as you can.

Re-colour your world

Colours can affect our moods, so if you feel that you need a living makeover; consider putting in colours that suit your needs.  If you find vibrant colours more relaxing, put them where you want to chill out. This varies with personal taste, so use what feels best for you.

Changing a colour scheme doesn’t stop at repainting the walls or putting up new wallpaper.  Consider changing bed sheets or cushion covers, putting up new pieces of art or even buying new lamps.  Add plants if you’d like more natural greenery or even complement your room colours with appliances.  Electrolux offers vacuums like the Ergorapido in a wide range of colours, and you can ‘store’ your vac visibly while kitchen ranges like the elegant Ebony range uses black appliances to give your kitchens a touch of contemporary class.
