Before there were refrigerators, there were wine caves and underground cellars offering cool, dark, humid and still surroundings, or simply, ideal storage conditions for wine.

That has not changed today, although most will find owning an underground cave a challenging prospect. This is why good wine chillers mimic those conditions to give the modern wine connoisseur and their precious vintages the best conditions for optimal aging and cellaring of wine.

Whether you’re starting up a wine collection at home or just looking for a wine chiller that’ll fit into any space, the new Electrolux Vino wine chiller is here to help you store your precious wines in the perfect conditions.

Here are some tips for storing wine and how the Electrolux Vino wine chiller does it best.

Keep it in the dark

All wines should be stored away from UV-based sources of light, such as direct sunlight and fluorescent lights. It’s not so much the brightness that hurts the wine, but the UV rays in such light sources, which cause wine to be “light struck”. This results in premature aging of the wine, affecting its flavour as well as causing it to produce an unpleasant smell. White wines or any wine that is bottled using light or clear glass are the most sensitive to such light degradation. That is why the Vino wine cellars feature triple glazed, hermetically sealed solar glass to minimise intrusive UV degradation of your wines.

The Electrolux Vino wine chiller is more than just a wine storage appliance.  It’s styled to fit in contemporary homes and showcase its owner’s appreciation for the finer things in life.  This is why it has six LED lights clustered in pairs projecting light between the bottles, thus allowing owners to easily make their selection of wines. LED lights do not contain UV rays, hence there’s no threat of light degradation.

Keep it cool and even

If you’re looking to keep your wines for over a year, storing them in a professional wine chiller is recommended, particularly in hot and humid climates. A varied wine collection is best stored at about 12°C. Wine storage temperatures should not go over 24°C for long, as wines will start to oxidise above that temperature.

Temperatures in a wine fridge should also be kept as constant as possible, with any changes occurring slowly. Dramatic fluctuations in temperature cause premature aging of wines from overbreathing. If changes are needed in the storage of wines, it should not fluctuate more than 1.6°C a day and 2.7°C a year. Red wines tend to be more susceptible to temperature changes.

The Electrolux Vino wine chiller has two zones whose temperatures are monitored electronically and can be controlled independently. An intuitive user interface panel allows you to easily set the temperature for both parts of the chiller before locking it.

Keep it on its side

Wine bottles kept on their sides keep the wine in constant contact with the cork. Keeping the cork moist prevents it from drying out and allowing air into the wine, thereby spoiling the flavours. Storing the wine label side up also makes it easier to spot sediments in the wine as well.

The Electrolux range of Vino wine chillers feature telescopic shelves made from eco-friendly bamboo that are designed for Burgundy and Champagne bottles, allowing you to store a variety of wines.

Keep it still

Wines should also be stored in a way that avoids any unnecessary movement.  Once stored, try not to move a bottle at all. Vibrations from heavy traffic, motors or generators also negatively affect wine, so keep it in a place where there’s little movement from both people and electrical devices.

This range of chillers use specially developed refrigeration systems designed to isolate all vibrations from the shelves that your wine sits on. They are also equipped with telescopic shelves that allow wines to be arranged and accessed with minimal movement. In addition, its reversible door is designed to allow you to adjust the way you access the chiller; ensuring maximum ease for both you and your home.
