The recent findings from the Electrolux Asia Pacific Food Survey found that while the majority felt that breakfast was the most important meal of the day, most actually spent the least amount of time (as little as seven minutes) preparing it.

With the demands of the modern lifestyle and hectic family schedules, time  always seems to be in short supply.

But just because you have little time doesn’t mean you can’t put together a quick, tasty and nutritious breakfast on your way out. Here’s how you can load up on healthful foods to get the right start to the day in under 10 minutes.

Healthy dairy options and spreads

Yogurt is a great way to start the day, being a source of calcium, iodine and phosphorous among other vitamins and minerals. Many commercial yogurts come sweetened with sugar, however, so opt for low-fat and low sugar yogurts.

Low-fat cream cheeses or ricotta can also provide a tasty and healthy topping for whole grain bread. Cream cheese spreads on bread can be topped with fresh strawberries or bananas and toasted in a sandwich maker like the Electrolux ESM3000 for a toasted sandwich that is crisp on the outside, yet maintains a creamy filling inside.

NEO toaster

The Electrolux ETS2000 NEO has a bunwarmer feature that allows you to toast your breakfast breads and buns regardless of shape.

For a quick variation on morning pizza, use some crusty bread, spread the ricotta generously on top and add tomatoes with a drizzle of olive oil. The Electrolux ETS2000 NEO series bread toaster has an integrated bunwarmer that will toast breads of any size and shape to the crispness you want.

Integrate fresh fruits

Instead of buying fruit-flavoured yogurts, mix in your own fresh fruits. Yogurts that come pre-packaged with fruits are likely to contain a large amount of fructose, or sugar.

Fruits can also be stirred or blended into cream cheese for spreads that are rich in both flavour and fibre. If you can’t spare the time to get the blender out, quickly slice fruits like bananas to make sweet toppings that also put fibre in your body.

A glass of fresh fruit juice with pulp is a great complement to any breakfast, providing both the fruit’s vitamins and minerals along with fibre in an easily consumed form. The Electrolux EJE3000 juice extractor can juice any fruit handily without even requiring you to chop them into pieces.

Cereals and nuts

If you need to take your cereal with you, use yogurt instead of milk, and top it with fruits to increase the health factor.

Fibre-rich cereals like bran flakes combined with low-fat milk, fresh berries and nuts like almonds or walnuts can be a fast, yet well-rounded meal.

Almonds are a rich source of dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that help protect against disease, while walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and help lower cholesterol levels.  If you really need to be out the door quickly, just throw a couple of these into your  fruit yogurt mix for a healthy and portable solution.
