Spice up your snacking with these healthy dips


A healthy snack doesn’t always mean that you have to give up on taste. If that sweet potato chip or taro chip isn’t quite doing it for your taste buds, don’t turn back to fat and sodium-laden commercial snacks just yet.

Eating chips, bread or pita crisps with a healthy dip can add extra flavour and variety to a mid-day nibble. Here are some time-tested dips that can complement a low-calorie snack time.

A traditional Argentinian dip, Chimichurri is a refreshing pesto-like sauce made from finely chopped parsley, orgegano, garlic, olive oil and white or red wine vinegar. This piquant combination is great on both chips and steaks. It can also be used as a marinade for grilled meat.

Additional flavourings like coriander, paprika, cumin, thyme, lemon and bay leaves may be included to taste. All you need is a blender like the Electrolux Powermix silent to mince and blend the ingredients to a fine paste, and you’ll have a taste of summer in a bowl.



An ancient Middle Eastern food that is simple to make, hummus uses cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini (sesame seed paste), olive oil, cumin, lemon juice, salt and garlic. And it has lots of nutritional value – hummus is high in iron and vitamin C, with significant amounts of folate and vitamin B6. Chickpeas are also a good source of protein and dietary fibre.

For an especially smooth hummus, be sure to first blend the tahini and lemon juice in a blender like the Powermix Silent, then scrape off the sides and bottom of the bowl and blend again. The Powermix Silent’s four- winged serrated blades ensure a smoother result every time.

Add the olive oil, minced garlic, cumin and salt to the mix and blend before adding the chickpeas. If the mix is too thick or has tiny chunks, slowly add two to three tablespoons of water into it until the perfect consistency is achieved. Scoop it out into a bowl or dish, drizzle olive oil over it and sprinkle with paprika before serving.


Pico de gallo

Pico de gallo is a refreshing Latin American dip that is high in fibre. 

A Latin American dip commonly known by the generic moniker “salsa”. This is a fresh sauce made from finely chopped plum tomatoes, white onions, cilantro leaf, jalapeno peppers, lime juice and salt. Simply combine all these ingredients in a bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and consuming it will give one a cool, refreshing feel.

Simply combine the ingredients in a blender, and chill in a refrigerator until you want it to accompany your light afternoon bites.
