Easy oatmeal breakfast ideas with a difference

Photos

Oatmeal is possibly one of the healthiest breakfast options to start your day. This gluten-free food is low in calories and fat but high in fibre and protein – great for stopping food cravings and reducing bad cholesterol.

Now if it only wasn’t so tasteless. Or is it? Oatmeal doesn’t have to be a gummy, ‘instant meal’ disaster. Preparing a delicious bowl with sweet or savoury toppings quickly takes about five minutes.

For a properly cooked version, just combine roughly equal parts oats with liquid, which can be milk or water in a pot. Bring to a boil before lowering the heat to simmer.  Stir frequently to prevent lumps from forming.

Cook until the oatmeal reaches your desired consistency. Alternatively, using a microwave like the Electrolux EMS2048X cooks the oatmeal in a minute and a half on a high setting. The thickness of the oatmeal can be varied by adding more or less water; plus you don’t even need to stir continuously using this cooking method.  Now comes the tasty part – deciding what to put in it.

Give a healthier take on peanut butter and jelly with peanut butter and grapes in your breakfast oatmeal.

Here’s a new take on the classic peanut butter and jelly recipe. Simply stir in two tablespoons of peanut butter while preparing one serving of oatmeal. Top with half a cup of red grapes and you have a delicious breakfast combination that provides both energy, fibre and a dose of antioxidants.
Bacon and Maple Syrup

Have a hearty Canadian-style breakfast for those who prefer savoury foods. Cook one slice of bacon until crisp and break in half. Prepare one serving of oats and drizzle one tablespoon of maple syrup over the oatmeal and serve with the bacon.

Melt some cheddar and mix scallions into your morning oatmeal for a savoury start to the day.

There can never be such a thing as too much cheese. While preparing the oats, stir in a quarter cup of extra-sharp cheddar and a quarter teaspoon of paprika. The cooking process should melt the cheese into the oatmeal. Season with ½ teaspoon of salt and pepper, and top with one scallion that’s been chopped into small pieces.

Oatmeal with Fried Egg and Avocado

Here’s an oatmeal with a Mexican twist. Fry an egg and season it with half a teaspoon of salt and pepper each. Cook sunny-side up until slightly runny. Slice a quarter of an avocado. Serve the egg on top of the oatmeal, and top it with the sliced avocado and two tablespoons of fresh salsa.
