Cleaning smoky smells out of your laundry

Air quality has been a concern in recent years, with the Southeast Asian haze making an annual appearance during the dry season.  A result of smoke created by forest fires, these particles not only make visibility and breathing difficult, they also stick to surfaces like clothing that can leave them smelling and looking the worse for wear.

Here are some handy tips to help you tackle the hazy season.

Vinegar and baking soda

White vinegar and baking soda are two of the most versatile cleaning agents you’ll find in your kitchen. The slightly acidic vinegar can break down odours at the molecular level and is especially effective against smoke. You can use it in your laundry to get rid of any stubborn smells in your fabrics.

If you would rather not add vinegar to your wash cycle, try soaking clothes in a mixture of water and baking soda instead. Baking soda is one of the most effective weapons against odours in any household, and it’s no different for clothes.

For those who are strapped for time, consider investing in an Electrolux Time Manager washing machine with the Vapour Action feature. This adds an extra vapour cycle to the laundering programme, which removes both small particles and allergens from clothing.  As an added bonus, it leaves your clothing fabrics softer and looking more vibrant too.

Air purifiers

Staying indoors is one of the best ways to stay out of the haze.  Having an air purifier can also help to cleanse the immediate atmosphere within the home.  If you’re investing in air purifiers, look into those with HEPA filters, which can filter out more than 99.7 per cent of organic matter and allergens.

For a clean and refreshing environment, air conditioners like the Electrolux Viva Grande contain both HEPA and plasma filters that draws in harmful allergens in the atmosphere, traps and kills them. This prevents the air conditioner from re-releasing them into the air.  In addition to keeping your home cool, this air conditioner also releases vitamin C molecules into the air, providing an extra health boost for you and your family.
