Making your kitchen appliances sparkle with the right techniques

Small kitchen appliances are a life-saving boon to the busy homemaker, saving us time and effort in preparing food and cooking. With many moving parts, as well as nooks and crannies for bits of food to get stuck, ensuring that they are properly cleaned can save you both time and money in the future.

Blenders

When cleaning a blender, always take the blades and any removable parts off but remember to exercise care when doing so.  It’s best to soak the parts in a sink filled with warm water and dishwashing liquid.

The blender’s jug can be hand washed using warm, soapy water or in a dishwasher. Blenders like the Electrolux Powermix Silent have dishwasher-friendly jugs that are designed to be easy to clean by being smooth on the inside. They can fit into dishwashers like the Electrolux ESL6370RO, which have flexible baskets that can be moved to fit your items.

To prevent rust, be sure to dry the blades carefully with a clean towel or cloth.  Dry the rest of the blender’s pieces thoroughly and wipe down the blender’s base with a damp cloth and dishwashing liquid. Any part of the blender with machinery should not be submerged in water.

Coffeemakers

After making your morning coffee, remove and wash the filter as well as the carafe.  Soak them in warm, soapy water before rinsing and replacing them.

If the appliance needs descaling, pour two to three cups of water and an equal amount of white vinegar in the water chamber and activate its brewing function. Turn the machine off halfway through the brewing cycle and let the solution sit inside the machine for an hour before turning it back on to complete the cycle.

Descale coffee makers regularly to ensure great tasting cups of coffee for the long term.

After that, run two cycles of plain water through the machine to rinse out any leftover vinegar. Wipe down the outside with a wet cloth and dishwashing liquid. Coffee makers like the Electrolux ECM1250 come with an anti-drip valve that prevents excess dripping of coffee onto the exterior, making it easier to clean.

Microwave Ovens

Place a mug filled with water and a few slices of lemon in the centre of the microwave oven and turn it on high power for three minutes. The resulting heated mixture will soften food spills in the microwave while eliminating odours, and should be left inside the oven for another three minutes.

You can then wipe down the oven’s interior walls with a cloth soaked in warm, soapy water. Take out the turntable and scrub. Its wheels and other small movable parts can also be cleaned with a toothbrush.
