Tips to quickly improve your cooking skills

Cooking is seen as a skill improved through years of experience, with techniques and recipes passed down from parent to child. Becoming a master chef is a lifelong journey, as the recent Electrolux Asian Food Survey 2014 has shown. The survey, conducted in 10 countries in the Asia-Pacific, with over  5,000 participants taking part, showed that over 73% of adults in all countries aspired to continue improve their cooking skills.

Becoming a better cook however, may not necessarily mean hours spent toiling in the kitchen. Just a few simple tips could make a huge difference in how your meals turn out.

The right equipment

The Electrolux Inspiration oven range has built in temperature sensors that can tell when a cut of meat is done.

Using the right equipment to cook can make a huge difference.  This applies to more than just using the right utensils for the right cooking method. The use and control of heat is one of the most important factors in ensuring a dish turns out optimally.

That’s why appliances adapted from professional kitchen technology can help to create meals that taste as though you are eating out. The intelligent Electrolux Inspiration steam combination oven, for example, contains a built-in meat probe that ensures any roast is done to your preference.

Understanding recipes

Cooking resembles chemistry in that the smallest change in ingredients may change the entire result. For example, if a recipe calls for 500 grams of chicken breasts, trimmed, it means you should buy 500 grams of chicken breasts and cut off the fat. However, if the recipe calls for 500 grams of trimmed chicken breasts, you should either buy cuts that have been trimmed or buy more than 500 grams of chicken breasts.

This small detail means that the nutrition and flavour of a dish changes, and can even affect how the dish is cooked.

Always have something fresh

Nutrilight fruits

The Electrolux NutriFresh fridge’s nutrilight feature helps to keep fruits fresher for longer

A good chef always has something fresh in the fridge, even if it’s just fruits, herbs and spices.  Fresh herbs and spices help to create bright, aromatic, vibrant-tasting dishes, reducing the need for salt and sugar. Citrus fruits add a tangy burst of flavour, and keeping them in a fridge like the Electrolux FlexFresh with its nutrilight feature ensures that they remain fresher for longer.
