Get baking the healthier way with yoghurt!

A sweet tooth can be the bane of svelte waistlines, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have your cake and eat it.  If you’re looking to reduce the calorie count, fat and cholesterol levels during baking, look into one of the current darlings of the culinary world, the high protein, low fat Greek yogurt.

Yogurt can be used to replace high-fat ingredients like butter and cream cheese in baking without compromising on the taste of the end product. Ovens like the Electrolux Inspiration range can make the end result even better, with its Ultrafanplus convection feature that ensures all your cakes and cookies come out evenly and perfectly cooked.

The amount of Greek yogurt used in your recipes will differ from that of butter or cream cheese so here are some general guidelines.

Cookies

Reduce the amount of butter in the cookie recipes by cutting the amount in half (or more depending on the flavour you like), replacing it with full-fat plain Greek yogurt. This method will reduce the calories and saturated fat. Try it out with these sugar cookies, chocolate chips, or peanut butter oatmeal cookies.

Cheesecake

For a light and tangy cheesecake, swap out the fatty cream cheese with fat-free Greek yogurt. Lemon zest and blueberries add a nice finishing touch to this recipe.

Cakes

Greek yogurt will give your cake batter a nice moist texture and a bright flavour. You can use it in place of butter for everything from Banana Bread, Carrot Cake, and Spiced Apple Bundt, as well as Chocolate Cake.

Yogurt can be a low-fat substitute for butter in cakes without compromising on taste.

Brownies

Adding Greek yogurt instead of butter to your batter will create a batch of some truly rich and fudgy brownies. Try adding nuts, chocolate chips, and white chocolate chips along to the batter, like these delicious ones, for more texture.

Frosting

For an easy topping for your baked goods, reduce the amount of butter from your frosting recipe by adding strained Greek yogurt. Try a flavoured yogurt, like this Strawberry recipe, or mix in fresh juices, extracts, or flavourings.
