Taking your family on a road trip this June? Packing some snacks for the kids during long drives is essential for a smooth journey. There’s no need to stock up on potato chips and soda however. There are plenty of healthy and equally tasty options you can pack from home with just a little preparation.

Apple Slices with Peanut Butter

This simple snack simply requires that you slice up some apples and spread peanut butter on them before or during the trip. Add a bit of lemon juice to the apple slices to prevent them from turning brown too quickly.

Vegetable sticks and hummus

Vegetables such as carrots, celery and bell peppers can be cut into sticks and stored in a cooler. These vegetables go well with hummus, which is low in fat content and high in taste. These salty, low calorie treats are easy to prepare. Just drain the juice from the jar before leaving. Some come stuffed with bell peppers or cheese, enhancing both taste and nutrition. Also consider other pickled vegetables like peppers and cucumbers, which can be fun, tasty and healthy treats in a car.

Popcorn can be a delicious and healthy snack when flavoured the right way.

Lightly flavoured popcorn can be a popular snack and great alternative to potato chips. Popcorn is low in saturated fats and cholesterol but high in fibre. Just be sure to get a flavour or variety that is low in sodium and avoid flavours like caramel-corn, cheese-coated or chocolate.

Consider mixing your own popcorn flavours at home using olive oil, cumin, chili powder, lime zest and lime juice for a spicy lime popcorn, or olive oil, sea salt, Italian seasoning and parmesan cheese for a more Italian twist.
