Guilt-free popcorn flavours for movie nights

Photos

Movie nights don’t have to feature popcorn slathered in butter and salt. By itself, popcorn is one of the healthiest snack options. One cup of unflavoured popcorn contains just 30 calories and it’s easy enough to make at home.

You can pop your own popcorn at home in a microwave with nothing more than a paper bag.

Just pour ¼ cup of popcorn kernels into a lunchbox-sized paper bag and fold the top over several times to ensure the kernels don’t spill out.  Microwave at full power until you get 3 seconds between pops.

Microwaves like the Electrolux EMS2540X are more than up to the task.  Its LED control display with timer also makes it easier to check the time in between pops.  All that’s left is choosing the flavour you want.

Cajun

Sprinkle 1.5 teaspoons each of salt, paprika, cayenne pepper, onion powder and garlic powder for Cajun-inspired popcorn.

Plain popcorn can be a healthy snack at only 30 calories per cup.

Cheesy

Sprinkle one tablespoon of Parmesan cheese. You can use either freshly grated or canned Parmesan. For a touch of luxury, mix in truffle butter or oil. If you want to take it one step further, add dried oregano and red pepper flakes for a pizza flavoured twist.

Chocolate

Getting chocolate-flavoured popcorn is simple when the corn is freshly popped. Just add one tablespoon of mini chocolate chips and toss well. Alternatively, for a Mexican twist, you can sprinkle a teaspoon of butter, a teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder, a few shakes of cinnamon and a dash of cayenne.

Margarita

Sprinkle freshly popped popcorn with 1.5 teaspoons each of salt, chilli powder and grated lime zest. Add a little cilantro for extra flavour. This adds calcium, vitamins A and C, as well as antioxidants to your popcorn snack.
