Four tips for a successful play date

Play dates are a great way for kids to meet new friends and learn to socialise with other children their age. They’re also great for stay-at-home parents to get some much-needed social interaction in.

Take into account the ages of the children involved when hosting a play date, and set the time accordingly.

Schedule appropriately

Make the whole experience easier on yourself with an appropriate start and end time. Depending on the age of the children attending, you may run into conflicts with baby nap times and meal times for older children.

An ideal length for a play date is about one and a half hours to two hours at most. With toddlers and preschoolers, they need to be fed and rested beforehand.  Tired and hungry toddlers are cranky toddlers, which will not make for a fun play date. Plan for a session around lunch time where they can come over and eat together, play, then head home for naps.

Don’t stress out about cleaning

You’re not holding a house viewing for potential buyers, so don’t stress out about cleaning every nook and cranny beforehand. Just mark out a few rooms or areas for your guests and manage the mess in those areas.

The Electrolux UltraSilencer is ideal for thorough cleaning around the home.

Essential areas to pay attention to are the bathroom, kitchen and the play area. Vacuums like the Electrolux Ultrasilencer make it easy to clean around the home, with its telescopic tube providing an extended reach and HEPA filter removing even the tiniest particles from the environment.

Make Play Dates Fun and Interesting

If the kids don’t already know each other, first introduce them to one another, then leave them to get friendly and play games together.

Do stay alert with toddlers. They can quickly get into trouble without realising. Ensure that all sharp or breakable items and edges are kept away and out of reach from little hands, and surfaces cushioned or carpeted.

Get creative with play date activities. You can hold a kiddy pool party or if the kids are older, have a pizza making party. This is useful to keep in mind if you have a regular group of kids for your hosted play dates.
