U.S. student moves to top 20 in Electrolux Design Lab 2013
Charlotte, N.C., July 2, 2013 — Electrolux today announced that U.S. design student Jillian Tackaberry was chosen as a top 20 finalist of the Electrolux Design Lab 2013 competition.
A breathing wall that cleans the air, a hologram cooking appliance preventing loneliness and a robotic cleaning appliance running on kinetic energy are some of the innovative concepts that were also among the top candidates. Addressing the brief of Inspired Urban Living, these concepts are now facing the last challenge before stepping in front of jury to compete for the main prize of 5,000 Euros and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design centre.
Jillian Tackaberry, an industrial design student pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, designed the Air Drop, which is a hanging plant that provides a decorative and natural air cleaning solution for urban living consumers facing a growing trend—smaller and more efficient living spaces. In the most recent stage of the competition, Tackaberry provided concept images and design and functional details.
This year the Electrolux Design Lab semi-finalists have been chosen with a wide perspective by professionals from Electrolux Design, R&D and Marketing Innovation. In addition, the public has had a chance to influence the selection as two of the semi-finalists have been chosen by an online vote. These semi-finalists have been chosen from over 1,700 ideas from more than 60 countries and have worked their way through several selection stages; they have developed their concept and the visual details of their ideas and will now enter the functionality development stage. Design Director and Head of Jury Thomas Johansson is impressed by the submissions this year:
“The submissions in Design Lab 2013 are surprising, thought provoking and of high quality,” said Johansson. “It has been an exciting process to follow the competitors as they develop their concepts online, give them feedback and engage in conversation. We have seen good ideas develop into great concepts by these talents and we are interested to see how these concepts are developed further.”
October Finals in Stockholm
Eight designers will be chosen to compete in the finals to be held in Stockholm, Sweden on October 16, 2013 and present their individual concept to a jury of experts. Once the talented finalists have been selected, the student whose concept receives the most public votes will be named the winner of the People’s Choice Award and will receive a prize of 1,000 Euros. First prize will be awarded to the student that the judging panel highlights as creating a ground-breaking design solution of the future. This student will receive 5,000 Euros and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design centre; second prize is 3,000 Euros; and third prize is 2,000 Euros.
